ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Southern Illinois' Stephany Neptune was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year, the league announced at its annual awards ceremony Thursday night.
In Neptune's first season at SIU, the senior transfer from Tusculum College (Tenn.) is the only player in the league to average a double-double, leading the league with 10.9 rebounds per contest and 11.6 points. She ranks third in the Valley in assists (4.9) and steals (2.4) and fifth in blocks (1.2).
Neptune garnered five Newcomer of the Week honors this season, tallying 13 double-doubles and three times was just one assist shy of a triple double. She ranks 14th in NCAA Division I in rebounds per game, which currently ranks fifth all-time in SIU history.
Neptune is the fourth SIU player to win Newcomer of the Year honors. Current Wichita State assistant coach Carlai Moore was the last Saluki to win Newcomer of the Year honors, doing so in 2006.
