CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Southern Illinois Softball team dropped two games Saturday at the OSF Under Armour Showcase. The Salukis were defeated by Maine, 5-1, before falling to Penn State, 1-0.
Day one of competition was rained out yesterday, eliminating two games from SIU's schedule. Re-scheduling of the tournament resulted in a matchup against Maine, followed by the originally schedule Penn State game.
Alex Peters and Danielle Glosson both pitched complete games and walking only two batters a piece. Peters struck out nine batters to tie her season-high, while Glosson retired ten to also tie her season best.
Maine 5, Southern Illinois 1 (9)
The Salukis took the Black Bears to extra innings, as both teams battled for the lead through a tied game. But fell in the ninth inning, as Maine rallied with a grand slam to earn the win, 5-1.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning as Chelsea Held reached first base on an error by second baseman Brynne Davis. Held then advanced on a single by Alicia Garza, followed by a stolen base to occupy third. Held ended up scoring off another Maine error, giving the Salukis a 1-0 lead.
Maine scored in the fifth inning to tie the game, 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Black Bears loaded the bases in good position for the win. But a fly out to left fielder, Mallory Duran, would allow SIU to slip out of the inning before any runs would score.
With runners on second and third, Alex Peters struck out Cassie Hodgson to end yet another scoreless inning. But Maine would answer in the bottom of the ninth inning with a grand slam by Chelsea Soule for the win, 5-1.
Peters pitched a career-high 8.2 innings, striking out nine batters, also a career best for the junior transfer. In addition, Peters only walked two batters in her fifth complete game of the season.
Penn State 1, Southern Illinois 0
The Salukis battled against Penn State, but came up short in a close 1-0 loss.
Junior pitcher Danielle Glosson had an impressive outing, striking out the first six batters to hold the game scoreless through the first two innings of play.
The Nittany Lions scored in the top of the third inning, for a 1-0 lead, which would prove to be the only run of the game from either team.
The Salukis put two runners on base in both the fifth and seventh inning, but were unable to score, dropping the contest, 1-0, to Penn State.
Glosson struck out ten batters for the second time this season, one shy of her career best. She walked only two batters, and allowed only four hits.
SIU's three hits on the night came from Natalee Weissinger, Katie Wilson and Courtney Kennedy.
The Salukis move to 13-9 on the season following today's action, as they prepare to face Fairfield Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.
