CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team was unable to improve with the weather on Monday, as it fell three spots in the rankings to finish in seventh place at the 16th annual Saluki Invitational held at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
"I was disappointed with today's round," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "The weather was bad yesterday, but we played better. Today we jumped up 10 shots - we just took too many big numbers on our home course."
As a team, SIU shot 326 Monday compared to Sunday's 316, totaling a 36-hole score of 652 and causing it to fall into the middle of the 15-team field. Indiana State and Drake battled to a close finish for the tournament's top honors. The Sycamores ended one stroke ahead of the Bulldogs, clinching first place with a score of 617. Drake's Olivia Lansing earned individual medalist honors, shooting a one-over-par 145.
Alisha Matthews continued her solid play for the Salukis, recording her first finish inside the top-10 this spring as she tied for ninth place with a 156 (75-81). Meg Gilley finished three strokes behind at 159 to tie for 16th place. Jenna Dombroski and Alex Anderson were the last two scorers for Southern, posting final scores of 166 and 167. Shaina Rennegarbe narrowly missed the Saluki top four, carding an overall 168.
"There really are no excuses, but we are a young team," Daugherty said. "We should know how to play Hickory because we practice it all the time. We just didn't execute the big shots today. Still, we are hoping to peak at the right time, and for us the right time will be the conference championships."
Southern will have one more opportunity to sharpen it skills before Missouri Valley Conference championship action, when it travels to Peoria, Ill. to compete in the Grand Prairie Collegiate Classic April 5-6.
