CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team gave up 10 or more runs for the seventh time in eight games as the Salukis fell, 18-2, Friday in the first game of a three-game series with Purdue at Abe Martin Field.
SIU (2-6) is now allowing over 13 runs per game and has given up 12 or more hits in all eight games this season. The Boilermakers (1-4) posted 19 hits against the Salukis Friday and scored four or more runs in three different innings.
"It all starts with the pitching and obviously we are not getting it done on the mound," head coach Dan Callahan said.
Purdue starter Matt Bischoff had SIU's number, as he picked up his first victory of the season (1-1). Bischoff threw six innings and only allowed two runs off of five hits and he struck out five Salukis on the afternoon. Drew Wurdack recorded the save, as he threw three scoreless innings.
Both Saluki runs came off of solo homers. The first was from sophomore Jordan Sivertsen in the second and freshman Nick Johnson had the second in the fifth. Johnson finished the game with two hits, as did senior third baseman Tony Lepore.
11 of the 12 Boilermakers who made a plate appearance got a hit in the game. Designated hitter Brad Schreiber did the most damage, as he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
SIU used five pitchers for the fifth time in the last six games. Left-handed freshman Austin Johnson was the only one not to surrender a run Friday, as now leads the team with a 3.60 ERA in three relief appearances. Junior lefty Randy Hoelscher was credited with the loss, his first in two starts.
Siversten and the Salukis struck first Friday on his two-out, ski-high, solo homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the second. It was the first hit of the game, but one of just seven for the Dawgs on the day.
As has been the story for the Salukis this season, Purdue came right back with a pair of big innings to blow the game wide open. The Boilermakers scored four unearned runs in the third and six earned in the fourth.
Purdue second baseman Eric Charles drove in a pair of runs in the fourth with his double down the right-field line. Charles also finished with four runs driven in.
Johnson homered for the first time in his career in the fifth, a solo to right on a 3-0 count.
Southern Illinois and Purdue are back at Abe Martin Field on Saturday for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
