CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Softball team grabbed their fifth-straight doubleheader sweep of the conference season with a two-game victory over Indiana State on Saturday. The 80 former players that were in attendance for the alumni reunion, watched the Salukis take game one in an 8-0, run-ruled win that ended in six innings. SIU handed the Sycamores their eleventh conference loss of the season in game two with a 3-1 win.
A six-inning shutout in game one came as no surprise, considering the Salukis have posted run-ruled victories in each game one doubleheader of the conference season. All five of those shutouts led to doubleheader sweeps.
SIU moves to 26-12 overall, 11-1 in Valley play, while the Sycamores drop to 14-21 overall, 1-11 in conference action.
SIU put up 16 hits in two games against the Sycamores, while recording three doubles, one home run and 12 stolen bases.
"I feel with our team's speed and power, we can create a lot of havoc," head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "As long as I don't get greedy with it, I believe it can be used as a benefit."
Southern Illinois 8, Indiana State 0 (6)
SIU was slow to get on the board, but ended up with eight runs, seven of which came in the sixth inning, to run-rule the Sycamores.
"I think we're a contagious hitting team," Blaylock said. "When things start going well for us, we tend to roll after that."
With a 1-0 lead and two runners on base, Cristina Trapani muscled one over the left field wall, driving in Chelsea Held and Natalee Weissinger for a three-run home run. SIU led 4-0, and went on to put four more runs n the board ending the game in six innings.
Held went an impressive 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs against Indiana State. The junior also had a stolen base, contributed to the team's seven total in game one. Senior Allie Hanson stole two bases, marking the first time she has stolen a base in her career at SIU.
Danielle Glosson earned the win for SIU, moving to 15-8 overall, 9-1 in Valley play. The junior threw her fifth complete-game shutout in Valley play on Saturday, allowing only five runs in her 10 conference appearances this season. She allowed only one hit on the day, walking one and striking out six at the plate.

SIU grabbed their fifth-straight conference doubleheader sweep in game two, with a 3-1 victory. Katie Wilson and Allie Hanson both put up an RBI double to propel the Salukis past the Sycamores once again. Natalee Weissinger also contributed to the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Indiana was able to get a run on the board in game two, earning their only run of the day. Lindsey Beisser would not allow the Sycamores to end the day scoreless, hitting her second home run of the season.
Alex Peters earned her first conference win of the season, walking only one batter, striking out four and allowing only three hits. Peters moves to 8-3 on the season, 1-0 in Valley play.
"Alex had been hurt earlier the week," Blaylock said. "I thought she came out really well."
Morgan Barchan went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one extra-base hit on the day. Wilson went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and one double.
SIU will wrap up the three-game series against Indiana State Sunday at noon.
