CARBONDALE, Ill. - SIU's six-game winning streak came to a halt Wednesday as No. 11 Missouri topped the Salukis, 9-2, in a non-conference mid-week matchup at Charlotte West Stadium.
Despite a loss, the Salukis battled Mizzou through all seven innings, fighting hard against the nationally-ranked Tigers. Head coach Kerri Blaylock was please with the team's performance, liking the effort she saw against their opponent.
"I thought the offense came out and put runners on base," Blaylock said. "But when you spot someone six or seven runs like that it's hard to come back from an offensive standpoint. I thought our kids did a good job, I thought we battled the whole way. We didn't chuck in the towel, we fought"
The Tigers (30-8) put up nine runs off 11 hits, including two home runs in their victory over SIU (27-13). Alicia Garza came up big in the first inning, hitting her sixth home run of the season for an early 1-0 lead. The Salukis would hold on to their lead until the third inning, when Mizzou put four runs on the board gaining a 4-1 lead.
The two teams battled it out in the fourth inning as the Tigers put up two more runs, and the Salukis scored off an RBI from Allie Hanson. With a 6-2 edge over the Salukis, Mizzou went on to score three more runs before quieting SIU with a final 9-2 win.
Southern went through all three pitchers, with starter Danielle Glosson being handed the loss. Glosson, who had won her last five-straight appearances, now sits 16-9 on the season with a 2.24 ERA. Garza's home run gave the senior her 124th career RBI, bumping her up to third all-time at SIU. The second baseman sits only nine away from the career record.
SIU looks forward to this weekend, as it hosts the top team in the Missouri Valley Conference, Illinois State. The Redbirds travel to Carbondale owning a perfect 10-0 record in conference action. Blaylock says the team will put the Missouri game behind them, and look toward the Valley games ahead of them.
"You forget it, you go and you worry about Illinois State," Blaylock said. "Missouri is No. 11 in the country for a reason. We're worried about a conference championship, and we're in pretty good standing."
This weekend's matchup against Illinois State will kick off Saturday with a doubleheader at noon, followed by a single game Sunday at noon to wrap up the three-game series.
