The Southern Illinois baseball team heads up north to take on the Illinois State Redbirds in Missouri Valley Conference play. Fans can listen to all three games of the series, which opens on Friday, April 16, at 4:30 p.m. Tune into WVZA 105.1-FM for Friday's game and WFRX 1300-AM for Saturday and Sunday's ballgames to listen to the action from the call of Mike Reis, the "Voice of the Salukis". SIU has won eight out of its last nine games against Illinois State and took 2-of-3 from the Redbirds the last time they visited Normal, Ill.
Senior right-handed pitcher Bryant George will be making his first career start on Friday. He has made 87 career appearances, which is the second most in school history and is the school's all-time saves leader with 24.
Southern Illinois is facing the team on top of the Missouri Valley Conference standing for the second-straight week.
Illinois State is projecting to start three right-handers against the Salukis. SIU has a 9-13 record against right-handed starters this year (7-3 vs. lefty's), but is batting .321 against right-handed hurlers (.304 against LHP).
SIU enters the weekend series having won seven out of its last 10 games.
The Saluki pitching staff has struck out 10 or more batters in each of their last two games. SIU strikes out 6.5 batters per game.
Of the three conference series SIU has played this year, the Salukis have only won the first game once. However, SIU is 3-0 in the final game of all three sets this year.
In the first 16 games of the season, SIU was hitting .294 and had a 9.58 team ERA. In the last 17 games (since March 19), the Salukis have a team batting average of .337 and a 4.19 ERA.
