Softball dominates SIU-Edwardsville, 11-2

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Softball team dominated the Cougars Thursday, in its final non-conference matchup of the season. The Salukis held the lead the entire game, scoring six runs in the seventh inning for a final 11-2 win at Cougar Stadium.
The Salukis (31-17) produced a season-high 17 hits off of SIU-Edwardsville (27-24) and tied their season-high doubles mark with five. The Cougars produced two runs off seven hits while committing three errors.
Southern Illinois broke a scoreless inning in the top of the fourth, grabbing a 1-0 lead over the Cougars. Courtney Kennedy stepped in as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded. A sacrifice fly from the sophomore drove in Natalee Weissinger for the 1-0 edge.
The Saluki offense came alive in the top of the fifth scoring four runs off five hits, including three extra-base hits. Doubles from Katie Wilson, Allie Hanson and Cristina Trapani produced the runs for SIU to give the Salukis a 5-0 lead.
The Cougars made some movement in the bottom of the fifth, as Kasey Schlafke hit a two-run home run to close the gap, 5-2. The home run brought in Alex Peters to relieve Danielle Glosson, who struck out five batters and walked none in four innings pitched.
SIU scored six runs off six hits in the seventh inning, gaining a deciding 11-2 lead over the SIUE.
Alicia Junker earned her third RBI of the season with a double that drove in Chelsea Held for a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Junker's double marked first of the season for the sophomore, fifth on the day for the Salukis.
With Haley Gorman and Mallory Duran on base, Garza was hit by the pitch to load the bases with one out. Wilson stepped up to the plate, grabbing her fourth RBI of the day as two runs scored off her single to center field. Hanson came up with her second RBI of the day with a single to the outfield, giving the Salukis a 10-2 lead. Trapani put up her second RBI of the day, grabbing the 11-2 lead in the final inning of play.
The Cougars would reach third base in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to produce any runs, falling to a final score of 11-2.
Hanson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run, while Wilson and Trapani both earned two hits off a season-high five at-bats.
Glosson gets the win on the day, improving to 19-12 overall, while Peters earned her first-career save.
The contest against SIUE wraps up non-conference play for Southern Illinois, as the Salukis prepare to host Northern Iowa this weekend. It's Senior Day Saturday at Charlotte West Stadium as the team will recognize Jenene Ebstein, Alicia Garza, Allie Hanson and Katie Wilson following Saturday's noon doubleheader. The final game of the three-game series will be played Sunday at noon.
