PEORIA, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Softball team earned a complete sweep over Bradley Saturday, in an 8-2 victory over the Braves.
SIU (24-12, 9-1 MVC) came out on top with a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Braves (11-18, 2-6) answered in the second inning for 1-1 game.
Danielle Glosson relieved Brittney Lang in the third inning, entering a no-out situation with runners on first and second. The junior worked a scoreless relief to get the Salukis out of the jam, holding the game tied at 1-1.
Both teams reached in each inning since scoring, but neither could come up with the any runs to take the lead. It wasn't until the fourth inning when Katie Wilson stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. The senior outfielder hit her third home run of the series, ninth on the season, with a grand slam to give SIU a 5-1 edge. Wilson's grand slam marked the second four-run blast from the Saluki offense in the Bradley series. Allie Hanson hit a grand slam Friday, both grand slams were giving up by Amanda Clack.
Sophomore Haley Gorman hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, driving in another run for a comfortable 6-1 lead with only an inning and half to play. Alicia Garza stepped up with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Cristina Trapani to score from third, recording her first RBI of the series. Southern led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Bradley's Janay Mitchell powered a home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth, marking just the seventh home run from the Braves this season. That would stand for the only run of the inning, going into the final inning of play, 7-2.
The Braves gave up yet another home run, this one by Natalee Weissinger, marking the sixth home run from the Salukis on the weekend. SIU has hit 16 home runs in ten Valley games so far this season.
The Salukis closed out the win in the bottom of the seventh inning, 8-2, for the complete sweep over the Braves. The Salukis have swept the last six three-game series against BU. As a team, SIU tallied six home runs, 23 runs and 46 total bases against Bradley. The Salukis allowed only four runs in three games against the Braves, holding them to a .189 batting average.
Wilson helped the Salukis to a sweep, recording four runs off four hits, including three home runs and ten RBI. Hanson went 4-for-7 with a grand slam, five RBI and 7 total bases. Glosson appeared in all three games, pitching 14.2 innings. The junior struck out 15 batters, allowing only three walks, two runs and eight hits in three games. Glosson improved to 14-8 on the season, 8-1 in Valley play.
SIU will take a break from conference play on Wednesday, as it travels to Southeast Missouri State for a midweek matchup against the Redhawks.
