CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Women's Golf team recently opened its new indoor facility, the Diane Daugherty Golf Facility, located at Hickory Ridge Golf Course. The facility is named after Daugherty, who is in her 24th year as head coach at Southern.
The facility has been two years in the making as a collaborative effort between SIU Women's Golf and the Carbondale Park District. It is comprised of astroturf, allowing for indoor putting as well as three indoor bays that serve as a driving range.
"In the past we have shared Sports Blast with softball, baseball and tennis," Daugherty said. "We weren't in there this past year so we really didn't have anywhere to go over the winter and it affected us."
The indoor facility is also heated, providing the team with year-round practicing capabilities, protecting them from unfavorable weather conditions that often inhibit the team from practicing.
"We can use this facility year round. It's going to take our program to the next level, recruiting wise," Daugherty said. "I think we'll get even better recruits in the future because of this facility."
Funding for the Diane Daugherty Golf Facility came from a private donor and the Tres Hombres/Michelob Ultra Golf Scramble, an annual golf scramble hosted by the SIU Women's Golf team.
"It's a beautiful facility we would not have had without the private donor or the scramble, because it took that much to get it done," Daugherty said.
