WICHITA, Kan. - Southern Illinois sophomore first baseman Chris Serritella was named to the 2010 All-Missouri Valley Conference first team, as was announced Monday night at the MVC Tournament Banquet in the Kansas Grand Ballroom of the Wichita Marriott Hotel.
Joining Serritella on the All-Conference list was second team honorees senior Nathan Forer (starting pitcher), senior Bryant George (relief pitcher) and junior Chris Murphy (outfielder). Senior Tyler Bullock (designated hitter), junior Randy Hoelscher (starting pitcher) and freshman Austin Montgomery (utility player) were all named honorable mention.
Serritella, who was honorable mention All-MVC as a freshman in 2009, becomes the 20th first team selection under head coach Dan Callahan. This is the 56th time in program history that a Saluki was named first team All-Conference.
Serritella's 63 RBIs are the second-most in the league this season and he also ranked in the top five of eight other statistical categories. He's become the 12th player in school history to have 80 or more hits in a year, his 19 multiple-RBI games are the second-most in the league this year and his 20-game hitting streak from April 6-May 15 was the third longest in the league.
For George, the school's all-time saves and appearance leader, this marks the third time in four years he has garnered all-conference recognition. He was a first team pick in 2009 and honorable mention in 2007. Bullock's selection to the honorable mention list follows up his first team accolade in 2009.
This is the first time Forer, Hoelscher, Montgomery and Murphy received all-conference recognition.
Southern Illinois opens up the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday against Evansville at 4 p.m. The game is being broadcast on WFRX 1300-AM with the call from "Voice of the Salukis" Mike Reis.
Video streaming of all tournament games leading up to the championship is available through the MVC Web site.
