Matthews earns Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois University's Alisha Matthews earned honorable mention on the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league Monday.
Matthews is a sophomore and carries a 3.68 grade point average in Recreation and Sport Management. The St. Louis, Mo. native competed in all nine tournaments this season, leading the Salukis with a 79.0 stroke average. She earned three top-ten finishes, recording 16 rounds in the 70's. Matthews posted a low-round of 74 at the Towson Golf Classic, the team's first competition of the season. The sophomore earned a sixth-place finish at the same tournament, her highest finish of the season.
This year's first team consists of Kelly Amundrud of Bradley, Harris, Britt Knutson and Miller of Illinois State; Mackenzie Mack, Astrid Parsson and Breanne Smith of Indiana State; and Olivia Lansing of Creighton. Honorable-mention selec- tions include Maggy Hejlek of Creighton; Alisha Matthews of Southern Illinois; Marisa Milligan of Illinois State; Breanne Neufeld of Bradley; and Elena Vukmir of Drake.
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic ESPN the Magazine All-America voting. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship.
