MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois baseball team only scored one run off of seven hits as the Salukis fell, 5-1, at Middle Tennessee on Saturday at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
SIU has now lost five-straight to the Blue Raiders. The Salukis fall to 23-24 on the year while Middle Tennessee improves to 28-18 with the win.
Blue Raider starter Chad Edwards (5-2) threw a complete game in the victory. He gave up the seven hits, but no earned runs and struck out seven Salukis on the day with no walks.
Sophomore first baseman Chris Serritella had two of SIU's seven hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. He scored Southern's only run, which was unearned in the fourth. Middle Tennessee committed three errors on Saturday, but the Salukis couldn't capitalize off its fielding mishaps.
All five of the Blue Raider runs were scored in two innings. They got three in the first and two in the third.
Southern Illinois left-hander Randy Hoelscher (3-3) went seven innings in the loss. He gave up 11 hits and those five runs. Hoelscher struck out one batter, but did not give up a walk. He has now only walked two batters in his last six starts (167 batters faced).
Six of Middle Tennessee's 11 hits came from Bryce Brentz and Tyler Burnett, who both had three. Second baseman Justin Miller drove in a game-high two runs and he also scored a pair.
After hitting five doubles in Friday's game, Tyler Bullock was the only Saluki with an extra base hit in Saturday's game. His eighth inning shot off the wall in right-center gave him his 10th double of the season.
