CARBONDALE, Ill. - After years of planning and months of construction, Southern Illinois University will officially unveil its state-of-the-art Saluki Stadium to the public on Tuesday, Aug. 24, when the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place.
The events kick off with a social gathering at 4 p.m. on the concourse of the press box side of the stadium. Then beginning at 4:45, the ceremonies for the grand opening and ribbon cutting will begin on the field.
SIU chancellor Rita Cheng, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia, head football coach Dale Lennon and other SIU dignitaries will be on hand for the grand opening.
The Saluki football team will be present for the event, as will the spirit squads and Marching Salukis. The football team will run through the tunnel for the first time as a team at the ceremony.
This is the first opportunity for fans in the community to see the new stadium from the inside, as the grand opening is free and open to the public.
