CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team has selected four team captains for the upcoming 2012 season. The team captains will be starting pitchers Cody Forsythe and Cameron Maldonado, first baseman Chris Serritella and outfielder Jordan Sivertsen.
The captains were selected by a team vote.
"All four of these young men are well deserving of this honor," Head Coach Ken Henderson said. "They have all had success on the field and have obviously earned the respect of their teammates."
Forsythe is coming off a breakout 2011 sophomore season in which the southpaw was named first team All-Missouri Valley Conference with an 8-5 record and a 2.35 ERA. He tied with Maldonado for the team lead with 69 strikeouts. Maldonado is a senior who started 15 games for the Salukis in 2011, his first with the school.
Serritella was named first team All-MVC in 2010 when he finished in the top five in the conference in eight offensive categories. He will be a junior this season after an injury sidelined him for the entire 2011 season. Sivertsen, a senior, was the only Saluki to start and play in all 57 games last season and earned All-MVC second team honors. He led the team with a .302 average, nine home runs and 48 RBIs.
SIU will open the season on Feb. 17 on the road against the University of North Florida.
