ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Valley Conference announced Monday that Southern Illinois senior center fielder Chris Murphy has been named the league's Player of the Week.
This is the first such honor in Murphy's career and he becomes the first Saluki to be named the MVC Player of the Week since Mark Kelly claimed the award on March 5, 2007.
Murphy led the Salukis to just their fifth 2-1 start to a season in the last 20 years. The Salukis won games over Grambling State and Nicholls State in the Louisiana Tech Classic, Feb. 18-20.
The Sewickley, Pa. native went 7-for-13 at the plate on opening weekend. He had at least two hits in all three games over the weekend, scored one run and stole one base.
Murphy tied his career-high in Sunday's 10-6 win over Nicholls State when he had four RBIs off three hits.
After starting the 2010 season with multiple-hit performances in 10 of his first 16 games, he is off to another fast start this year. Murphy was a second team All-MVC selection in 2010 after hitting a career-best .320.
