ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois throwers J.C. Lambert and Jeneva McCall have been named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference men's and women's field athletes of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.
This is the McCall's third and Lambert's second athlete of the week honor in 2010-11. Additionally, the honors mark the sixth straight week that at least one Saluki athlete has earned the weekly honor.
Lambert continued his stellar 2010-11 season by recording the men's weight throw title at the EIU Friday Night Special with a mark of 68-09.25. The junior's distance was more than enough for victory, as he defeated Illinois State's Akil Mills by nearly six feet and Eastern Illinois' Donald Romero by over ten feet. The victory was his seventh out of seven meets this season.
McCall impressed at the EIU Friday Night Special, taking an event title in the women's shot put and claiming second in the weight throw. In a preview of the MVC Indoor Championships, the junior thrower took the top spot in the shot put with a mark of 53-11.75, beating out Illinois State's Brittany Smith and Victoria Ziegler, along with Felisha Johnson of Indiana State. Prior to that performance, McCall finished the weight throw with a distance of 68-06.00.
In the weekly USTFCCCA computer rankings, the Saluki women held steady at No. 14 in the nation, while the men dropped one spot to No. 44.
The Dawgs will next compete this Saturday and Sunday, as they travel to Northern Iowa for the MVC Indoor Championships.
