CARBONDALE, Ill. - Dallas Baptist scored three runs in the top of the ninth to come back from a two-run deficit and beat the Southern Illinois baseball team, 6-5, Friday at a frigid Abe Martin Field.
The Patriots (14-9) pulled within one run on Jason Krizan's RBI single and then tied the game up when Tyler Robbins came home to score on a wild pitch. Kenny Hatcher's infield single with two outs plated the winning run.
SIU (6-16) and Dallas Baptist now turn to Saturday's rubber match to decide the series after Southern Illinois took game one on Thursday, 7-4. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Salukis held a 3-1 lead entering the top of the eighth on Friday, but Patriot shortstop Joel Hutter tied the game up with a two-run homer off of SIU starter Cody Forsythe.
Forsythe pitched very effectively, but his 100th pitch in the game that Hutter took out of the park kept him from getting the win. He went 7.0 innings, scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs, but just two were earned. Forsythe struck out three and didn't walk or hit a single batter.
Meanwhile, SIU had just five hits through seven innings and two of its three runs were scored with two outs. Both of those came in the third inning.
Freshman Donny Duschinsky gave Southern a 5-3 lead with his two-run double in the eighth.
A leadoff walk in the top of the ninth led to trouble for Southern and the Patriots ended up scoring the three runs to beat the Salukis.
Patriot reliever Jake Johansen (1-0) picked up the win and closer Chris Haney got SIU to go three-up and three-down in the ninth to record his seventh save of the season.
Sophomore reliever Austin Johnson (0-3) drew the loss for Southern.
SIU was out-hit 13-6 in the game. Duschinsky was the only Saluki with two hits and he finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
