Women's Golf wins Saluki Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team claimed top honors Monday at the Saluki Invitational held at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
It was the first time since 2008 that the Salukis took home their own tournament championship as they were led by a fourth overall place finishes by sisters Ashleigh and Cassie Rushing.
Cassie Rushing shot a team low 78 in the final round while Ashleigh Rushing was one stroke behind her with a 79 as the two finished with scores of 158 overall.
"We are really proud because the weather was not great, the greens were so good to us and we won in spite of our putting but it's a great win," Head coach Diane Daugherty said.
As a team, the Salukis shot a 320 on the day finishing with an overall 639, edging out Bradley by just two strokes as the Braves totaled a 641 overall to finish second in the field of 14 teams.
Shaina Rennegarbe and Alisha Matthews were the next top performers for the Salukis, both coming in tied for 14th overall with overall scores of 162.
Margaret Gilley finished tied for 21st with a 164, while Alex Anderson rounded out the top finishers for the Salukis with a 168.
Competing as individuals, Jennifer Bernhardt finished in a tie for 55th with a 172 and Amber Phillips rounded out the finishers in 85th place with a 190.
Bradley's Breanne Neufeld took home top individual honors as she scored a 150 over both rounds while Chelsea Harris of Austin Peay followed one stroke behind with a 151.
Western Illinois and Austin Peay finished tied for third overall while Eastern Kentucky rounded out the top five team finishes at the invitational.
Next up for the Salukis is the EKU Lady Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky. on April 9-10.
