CARBONDALE, Ill. - Jayna Spivey sparked the Salukis in the tournament finale of the Coach B Classic to as they split games with Wright State and Purdue on Sunday.
Spivey hit her fifth long ball of the season and recorded both RBIs in he game to help pace the Salukis (11-5) in a 2-0 victory against Wright State Sunday evening but it was game one against Big Ten foe the Purdue Boilermakers that the Dawgs would like to forget as they fell 11-1 in five innings.
"I was really disappointed and embarrassed of how we played against Purdue and I give credit to them (the Boilermakers) but when you lose like that to come back against a team who hits the bat as well as Wright State, I thought was very important and very proud of that game," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
It was an eventful opening weekend for the Salukis, after rain changed the tournament schedule on Saturday; the team saw two tough matchups from teams who both made the NCAA Regionals in 2010.
The Boilermakers (11-4) went ahead early but used a five-run fourth inning, which included three Saluki errors, to help them seal a victory, to win eight out of their last nine games.
Mallory Duran was credited with the lone RBI in the game, with a seventh inning triple and also saw hits from a doubles by Spivey and Natalee Weissinger, and a single from Taylor Orsburn.
Blaylock said it was Duran who carried the team offensively this weekend, as she went .500 from the plate in three games (5-for-10) with a triple and RBI and maintaining a .700 slugging percentage with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Duran, a team co-captain, has had a solid junior season as she has started in all 16 of the Salukis games while batting a .306 with three RBIs and is a perfect 1.000 in fielding percentage.
"She just set the table all weekend and she is a consistent presence who doesn't get too high or too low and she's really kind of figured it out," Blaylock said.
Southern was able to bounce back in the nightcap as it got a huge lift from Spivey's two RBI home run that would be the eventual game winner over Wright State.
Cristina Trapani also contributed big for the Dawgs going 2-for-3 with a double and Duran and Michelle Bradley also added hits in the win over the Raiders (5-7).
Danielle Glosson (6-3) picked up the victory as she threw her seventh complete game on the season.
The Salukis will continue their three week homestand as they host the Saluki Invitational as they host in-state competition DePaul and Illinois-Chicago Saturday and Sunday at Charlotte West.
