JONESBORO, Ark. -- Southern Illinois shaved 14 strokes off its first round score to finish the ASU Red Wolf Classic in a three-way tie for 12th place with a 36-hole score of 592.
After Monday's disappointing first round, Southern returned to the course Tuesday morning with a vengeance, as its top three scorers shot even or under par.
George Tate led the Saluki charge with a one-under 71, and David Griffin and Jake Erickson followed in suit, each carding 72's on the second round.
Richie Williams and Brandon Cauldwell were not far behind, both posting 74 on the second day of competition. Williams notched the best finish for SIU with his 36-hole score of 146, which was good for a tie for 30th place out of 102 individuals.
"I am very proud of the way our guys responded today," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We knew the adjustments we needed to make in order to be successful, and we came out and shot much better the second round."
SIU finished the tournament locked at 592 with UMKC and Northern Iowa for 12th place. Arkansas-Little Rock took the team title with a combined score of 566, while Meridian Community College fielded the individual medalist in Brandt Garon who shot 135 (66-69).
Other Missouri Valley Conference opponents Missouri State (572) and Illinois State (587) finished ahead of Southern in fourth and 11th place, respectively.
With its regular season schedule now complete, Southern Illinois looks ahead to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships which are scheduled to take place April 25-26. The Dawgs will look to close the gap on their second-place finish from 2010 at the conference tournament hosted by Missouri State in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.
