Softball blanks UT-Martin for fifth-straight win

MARTIN, Tenn. - Using a big sixth inning, the SIU softball team took home a 6-0 victory over Tennesse-Martin on Thursday.
The Salukis (24-12, 7-2 MVC) struck early off a Cristina Trapani RBI double in the first, but the game fell into a pitcher's duel until the top of the sixth where the they capitalized off two Skyhawk errors.
"I thought we did a good job especially with pitching and defense and I'm really pleased with how we handled ourselves on that end and on offense we also hit the ball really, really well," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Taylor Orsburn started the inning with a double and the Skyhawks (24-16, 13-4 OVC) would retire the next two batters on flyouts but a costly error in left field would score pinch runner Michelle Bradley and keep the inning alive for the Salukis.
Chelsea Held continued her hot plate performance with a RBI single as Skyhawk pitcher Morgan Lewis would then walk the bases loaded as another costly mistake in left field would clear the bases for the Salukis giving them a 5-0 advantage.
Haley Gorman added to the inning with a RBI single as the Salukis' bats were active with seven hits in the game.
Held and Mallory Duran both went 2-for-3 on the afternoon as the Salukis cruised to their fifth straight win.
"I think we just have some kids right now that are really putting the ball into play and hitting the ball hard and that everyone did a good job coming together," Blaylock said.
Pitcher Danielle Glosson improved to 15-8, as she allowed four hits and struck out two for her ninth shutout on the season.
The Salukis will be in action again on Saturday as they face Indiana State in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. CT in Terre Haute, Ind.
