Softball stops Cougars in run-rule win

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Jayna Spivey entered the SIU record books with her ninth home run of the season as she helped her team extend its win streak to nine with a 10-1 run-rule win over SIU-Edwardsville Tuesday.
The Salukis used nine hits including 2-for-2 performances from Mallory Duran and Taylor Orsburn and scored five runs in the fourth for the win.
"Our kids did a great job of responding after we gave them one run in the first inning and they just poured it on which is what we wanted them to do and I'm really proud of them and hope we can keep it going," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
SIU (28-12, 10-2 MVC) continued to work well with two outs as it has been all season, rallying for five unearned runs with two away in the bottom of the fourth.
Spivey hit her first career grand slam to cap off the inning, tying her 10th for single season home runs with former Salukis Katie Jordan (2003), Katie Louis (2006), and Katie Wagner (2008) who all hit nine in a season.
Four Salukis scored multiple RBIs in the game including two apiece from Haley Gorman, Cristina Trapani - who also hit a two run home run in the first - and Orsburn while Spivey drove in four.
Chelsea Held and Natalee Weissinger also recorded hits in the effort while Danielle Glosson recorded her 18th win of the season, including her seventh in a row, while striking out four.
The Salukis will look to keep rolling as they travel to Evansville for doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m. at Cooper Stadium.
