EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville halted the SIU softball team's 10 game win streak as the two teams split a conference doubleheader Wednesday.
The Salukis (29-13, 11-3 MVC) took the Purple Aces (10-34, 4-13 MVC) for 13 runs off 13 hits in game one, but couldn't follow it up in game two as they were shutout in the loss, their first since losing to Northern Iowa on April 3.
SIU 13, Evansville 3
Three Salukis hit home runs, including two in the sixth inning, to explode for 13 hits in a game one victory over the Purple Aces.
Chelsea Held hit two home runs highlighting the Salukis' win as she drove in a season-high four RBIs with a 2-for-3 performance.
Jayna Spivey and Mallory Duran also launched home runs in the effort as Spivey went long for her 10th of the season, moving her up into a tie for eighth place for single season home runs.
"I think this was another tremendous offensive performance and we did a great job of jumping out early and often," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Seven Saluki batters had hits in the game including a 3-for-4 performance from Taylor Orsburn and two hits from Morgan Barchan.
"Taylor seems to be coming up lately with some big hits and Chelsea Held did some great things in game one and really doing things on all cylinders in the game," Blaylock said.
Danielle Glosson continued a personal win streak of her own with her eighth consecutive victory on the mound, moving her to 19-8 overall and 7-2 in Valley play.
Evansville 3, SIU 0
The Salukis out hit the Purple Aces 5-2 but committed three errors en route to being shutout in the nightcap.
Southern attempted a one out seventh inning rally started by Spivey with a double followed by a Held single but failed to reach on their next two batters as they snapped their 10 game win streak.
"Game two was simply their (Evansville) pitcher (Taylor Perry) came out throwing well and I don't think we made any adjustments in the game whatsoever and the reason we had been on a streak was because we had kept our focus and stayed patient and everything went wrong in that game," Blaylock said.
Duran and Held both went 2-for-3 at the plate while Spivey chipped in a hit but it wouldn't be enough as Evansville earned its first shutout victory on the season.
"I give credit to Evansville for coming out and fighting hard and giving themselves the opportunity to win the ball game," Blaylock said.
Alex Peters (9-4) took the loss for the Salukis, striking out six and walking just one while picking up her first conference loss as well moving to 4-1 in the MVC.
The two teams will face off again on April 26 at Charlotte West Stadium with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
