CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team will begin action in the Missouri Valley Conference championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by Illinois State.
The tournament will take place in Normal, Ill. at the 18 hole, par 71 Weibring Golf Club. Teams will play 36 holes on Friday and conclude with 18 holes on Saturday.
Shaina Rennegarbe enters the tournament as the Salukis No. 1 golfer, after topping the team leader board at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic with a 27th overall finish.
Five different Salukis have claimed No. 1 golfer honors throughout the season and head coach Diane Daugherty said that could be one of the Salukis best threats in the tournament.
"That depth on the team has got to pay off because of how many number one's we have had and they haven't played all well at the same time so we are hoping to peak at the same time," Daugherty said.
The Salukis last won a MVC Championship was in 2007 and are expected to finish fifth this season.
"Where we are picked has bearing on us and we feel no pressure because if we finish better than fifth we've exceeded expectations but the way I look at this is that we have a talented enough team to weather whatever challenges we face," Daugherty said.
Highlights of the 2011 season include the Salukis first place finish at its own Saluki Invitational on March 27-28, its first title since 2008.
Cassie Rushing had an impressive freshman campaign with the Dawgs including earning MVC Player of the Week honors on March 23 and a second overall finish at the NIU Snowbird on March 17-18.
The ten-team tournament and will kick off play tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shot gun start.
