CARBONDALE, Ill. - Home runs lifted the SIU softball team to victories over Missouri State in doubleheader action Friday.
Mallory Duran hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth for a game one victory while Haley Gorman helped the Salukis go ahead in game two with her first long ball of the season.
Head coach Kerri Blaylock said she was happy to see her team not quit, perform, and make adjustments today after Wednesday's split with Evansville.
"I'm glad (about the win) because the other day at Evansville we sure didn't come back like I wanted to and we talked today and said `We just have to figure things out' and I thought they did a great job," Blaylock said.
SIU 4, Missouri State 3 (8 innings)
Duran highlighted game one with a 3-for-4 performance including the walk off home run as the Salukis ended the Bear's seven game win streak with the eight inning win.
The Salukis (31-13, 13-3 MVC) led 3-2 going into the seventh but the Bears (22-19, 10-8 MVC) would take advantage on three hits in the inning, all singles, to send the game into extra innings.
All it took was for Duran to step to the plate as she sent the first pitch she saw over the fence to grab the win for the Salukis.
"Again, Mal is just consistent with her life as anybody as I've ever coached and when you're that consistent with your life and emotions you're going to be great on the softball field," Blaylock said.
Taylor Orsburn went 1-for-3 with two RBIs off a double in the sixth while Morgan Barchan, Haley Gorman, and Jayna Spivey all added hits in the game.
Alex Peters reached double digit wins in the victory, moving to 10-4 on the season and 5-1 in MVC play.
SIU 5, Missouri State 3
Missouri State came out with an early 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Salukis battled back as Gorman broke the sixth inning tie with a two run home run to complete Friday's sweep.
The Bears led for the first two innings, as Gorman doubled then came around to score on a passed ball to tie the game at three apiece after three innings.
Bats felt silent until the sixth when Gorman lifted the team again with her two-run home run, her first long ball of the season, to provide the go ahead runs for the Salukis.
Cristina Trapani added a 2-for-3 performance as Chelsea Held and Orsburn added hits and an RBI apiece while Duran added a hit in the win.
Danielle Glosson earned her 20th victory on the season going 6.2 innings with five strikeouts while allowing just one hit.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the series finale on Strike Out Cancer day with first pitch slated for noon.
