ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois sophomore pitcher Cody Forsythe has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Forsythe improved to 3-0 in Valley play by throwing seven scoreless innings in a 3-2 victory at No. 28 Creighton last Saturday. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the game and allowed only four hits. Forsythe became just the third Saluki pitcher in the last three years to strike out 10 or more batters in a game.
The left-handed ace did not give up a hit until the fifth inning in Saturday's game and he threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 26 batters he faced. He walked two batters in the game, which was the first time in 10 starts this season that he has yielded more than one walk and he has lasted six or more innings in every start this year.
Over his last four games, Forsythe has now allowed just three total runs. The Calvert City, Ky. native leads the conference this season in inning pitched (69.1) and has the lowest ERA in the league (2.08).
Forsythe becomes the first Saluki this season to be named the MVC Pitcher of the Week. Outfielder Chris Murphy was named the MVC Player of the Week back on Feb. 21.
