ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois thrower Jeneva McCall has been named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference women's field athlete of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.
This marks the fourth straight week that McCall has taken the conference honor in the 2011 outdoor season, while it marks her seventh athlete of the week honor for the entire year.
McCall took her third throw event sweep of the year Friday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational, as she won the shot put, hammer throw and discus in convincing fashion. The junior began competition Friday with a personal best mark of 54-05.25 in the shot put, which topped teammate Gwen Berry by just over one foot. She continued her dominance on Saturday with a win in the discus, where her throw of 179-03 topped teammate Kim Fortney by 18 feet. McCall would follow that up with a career best mark of 223-04 in the hammer throw, as she led the Saluki charge that placed first through fifth in the event.
Both the men's and women's teams moved up in the most recent USTFCCCA computer rankings, which were released early Tuesday. The women's team rose two spots to No. 20, while the men's team jumped up nine positions to No. 45.
The Saluki track & field teams will return to action this weekend for split-squad action. Half of the team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the prestigious Drake Relays, while the other half will head south for the Memphis Tiger Invitational.
