SAINT LOUIS, Mo. -- Southern Illinois' Jorge Cavero was named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year at the pre-championship banquet Thursday night, headlining a host of awards for the Saluki tennis teams.
Cavero's honor came after he posted a 14-3 singles season record that included a seven match winning streak from March 29 to April 23.
Cavero, along with fellow freshman Adam Fabik, were named to the MVC All-Select team. Fabik went 13-4 in singles and 10-5 in doubles after a fall season where he went 17-1 with three tournament titles and took the SIU fall singles wins record along with him.
Sophomore Orhan Spahic was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team after accumulating a 3.93 GPA during his two seasons at SIU. Senior Falk De Beenhouwer was named to the Honorable Mention list after gaining a 3.32 GPA.
On the women's side, Melanie Delsart was named to the All-Select team for her efforts at the No. 1 spot in the lineup all season. Delsart, along with Vishakha Sheoran and Anastacia Simons, dominated the Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention list.
The No. 4 seeded Saluki men will open up the Valley championship Friday morning with a 9 a.m. matchup against fifth-seeded Bradley. SIU came out on top over BU in a highly-contested 4-3 tilt just last weekend and will look to repeat in the tournament's first round.
Southern's women, seeded fifth, will also face off at 9 a.m. against No. 4 Evansville. Evansville took the regular season conference match by a 6-1 margin.
