CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The SIU softball team couldn't get it done in Sunday's series finale, as it dropped a 9-5 decision to Northern Iowa.
The Panther's bats were hot early, as they amassed 12 hits including a Eranne Daugharthy home run in the second to get their offense rolling, as they held a lead for the entire game.
"I thought the UNI hitters did a good job adjusting and I thought that as hitters we did a better job today but it was just a little too late," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "We need to make adjustments faster and put more pressure on people because I feel we are capable of doing that."
The Salukis (19-12, 4-2 MVC) tried to get back in the game in the final two innings as they added five hits late in the game, including Mallory Duran double and a Natalee Weissinger fielder's choice RBI in the sixth and a Jayna Spivey home run in the seventh helped cut the lead to 9-5.
But the Salukis would get no more as the Panthers (20-14, 6-3 MVC) would bring in Jessica Severinsen for her second save of the year.
"I think that anytime you go on the road in conference play and especially with UNI being a good team but we shot ourselves in the foot with three unearned runs and in the last inning we could have had a shot with the bases loaded," Blaylock said. "That's where I thought we let it get away with too many mistakes on defense."
Spivey led the production at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs while Taylor Orsburn and Morgan Barchan added two hits each for the Salukis.
Haley Gorman added a single and Duran's double rounded out the Salukis offensive production, who totaled ten hits on the day.
Danielle Glosson (11-8) was credited with the loss in her two innings of work.
The Salukis will look to regroup as they face Eastern Illinois on Wednesday in Charleston, Ill. Beginning at 4 p.m.
