Softball places four on MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams

CARBONDALE, Ill - Cristina Trapani, Danielle Glosson, and Mallory Duran highlight four Salukis named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete teams, as voted by the league's sports information directors, announced Monday.
Trapani, Glosson, and Duran all earn their second consecutive honors on the first team list while Morgan Barchan was named an honorable mention.
With Southern's three first-team selections, it marks the 14th consecutive season that SIU has placed at least two athletes on the first team. They are also the only Valley school to post three athletes to receive first team accolades for 2011.
Trapani and Duran both carry 4.0 GPAs in finance and English education, respectively, and are two of the four on the list to have perfect performances in the classroom. Glosson carries a 3.6 GPA in human nutrition and dietetics while Barchan holds a 3.5 in biological sciences.
The quartet led the Salukis to their 15th consecutive season of 30 wins or more and a third place finish in conference play. In the classroom, the team combined had one of its most impressive semesters ever as their Fall 2010 cumulative GPA topped 3.6 overall, which was the fifth best for a team in school history.
Trapani is a two-time scholar-athlete first team honoree, having garnered the same honors last season. The senior catcher finished her Saluki career with a.279 batting average this season and tied for team high in doubles with nine, second in RBIs with 37, and had nine home runs. Trapani was an all-conference second team selection in 2010 and was also named player of the week on April 18. Academically, the Herrin, Ill. native, has been named to the conference honor roll, awarded the MVC Commissioners Excellence award and MVC President's Council Academic Excellence award in 2011 and named to the Dean's List seven semesters.
Duran earns her second consecutive first-team honors as she had a break out junior campaign for the Salukis. The junior outfielder leading the team and was second in the league in batting average with a .398 (64-for-161) with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 23 RBI. Duran lead the team and conference in runs score with 54 as she broke the SIU single season record for runs scored that was previously set in 1997. The Windsor, Colo. native also led the team in stolen bases going a perfect 11-for-11 while holding two lengthy hit streaks, a 13-game hit streak (2/25-3/23) and 11-game hit streak (4/10-4/30).
Glosson is also a second consecutive first-team honoree as she won honors last season. She wrapped up her career by posting her best record of 24-10 with a 2.21 ERA including four saves and 11 shutouts. She posted her second career no-hitter on April 26, 2011 at Charlotte West Stadium against Evansville. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native also ranks tied for 14th in the country in shutouts & tied for 12th in saves while at SIU ranks in the following categories: fourth all-time in school wins (67), fifth in strikeouts (701), sixth in innings pitched (702.6), seventh in complete games (71). She was also one of 30 finalist for 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Barchan was also impressive in her sophomore season as she held the third best batting average on the team with a .338 (47-for-139) with seven doubles, two triples, one home run. The Arcadia, Calif. native tied a single season record for hits in a game with a 5-for-5 performance against Indiana State on April 17. She also made 47 starts for the Salukis this season, primarily in right field.
