CARBONDALE, Ill. - Cristina Trapani and Mallory Duran have been named Capital One Academic All-Americans, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday.
Trapani was named to the first team with her 4.0 GPA in finance while Duran, who also carries a 4.0 in English education, was named to the second team. This is the first time since 2007 that the Salukis have had two Academic All-American selections and the first time since 2004 that a student-athlete has been named to the first team.
In 2007, Amanda Clifton and Ashley Hamby were third team honorees and Amy Harre grabbed the last first team honors for SIU in 2004. It's also the first selection overall since Krystal Stein was named to the third team in 2008.
SIU is also the only MVC school to have multiple selections and the only school to have a first team winner this season.
"I'm really proud of Cristina and Mallory and it's a huge honor and to have two kids selected is just tremendous and I cannot say enough positive things about their commitment to academics," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "They are great students and great athletes and they've been rewarded for that so I am really pleased."
Trapani, a Herrin, Ill. native, was the only Missouri Valley Conference player and Region V selection to make the first team. She graduated with honors from SIU in May with a degree and perfect 4.0 GPA in finance. On the field this season, the senior catcher held a .268 batting average with nine doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBI, 77 total bases and had a .503 slugging percentage and .353 on base percentage. She hit a walk off grand slam to start the season off with a win against Ohio at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational and finished her career 10th all time in career home runs with 19. Trapani was also earned MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honors this season.
Duran had a breakout junior season for the Salukis, as she led the team and was second in the MVC with a .398 batting average while breaking the 14-year-old SIU single season runs scored record as she recorded 54 runs in 2011. The Windsor, Colo. native, had nine doubles, two triples, and four home runs while driving in 23 RBI and had a .533 slugging percentage and .485 on-base percentage. She also led the league in on base percentage, runs scored, and second in hits with 64. She was perfect on the base path, going 11-for-11 in stolen bases. The junior outfielder was also a MVC All-Conference First Team selection and MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honoree.
