St. Louis - Alisha Matthews has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete First Team, announced by the league Tuesday.
This is the third scholar-athlete award for Matthews, who has been named to the honorable-mention team for the past two season.
The junior from St. Louis was the only Saluki to make the list as total of eight student-athletes earned first-team scholar-athlete honors, and five others earned honorable-mention status.
Matthews holds a 3.727 GPA in recreation and leisure studies as she finished the 2010-11 season with a 79.6 stroke average, which was fourth best for the Salukis. She also shot the team's low round score on the season with a 71 at the Turtle Bay Resort Collegiate Invite on Nov 2.
Bradley's Kelly Amundrud, the MVC Golfer of the Year, is the lone repeat first-team selection and is one of five scholar-athlete team selections who also earned first-team all-conference honors. In all, three student-athletes are repeat selections to the league's scholar-athlete unit as Amundrud's teammate Breanne Neufeld and Matthews were honorable-mention picks a year ago.
This year's first team consists of Amundrud and Neufeld of Bradley, SIU's Matthews, Lauren Hassell and Gretchen Huhnerkoch of Wichita State; Katie Jean of Illinois State; Michelle Mathwick of Drake; and Kelsey Welber of Missouri State. Honorable-mention selections include Brittany Atterbury and Abby Bermel of Northern Iowa; Caitlin Deeken of Bradley; Terra Miller of Illinois State; and Maggie Wood of Evansville. ISU's Jean, meanwhile, was honored at the State Farm MVC Championship as the league's Elite 18 Award recipient, given to the qualifying student-athlete participating at the championship with the highest GPA.
