Berry named MVC Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois thrower Gwen Berry has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference women's field athlete of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Berry successfully defended her Drake Relays hammer throw title in convincing fashion Saturday with a personal best mark of 231-04 in Des Moines, Iowa. The senior's mark was nearly 23 feet superior to second place Laura Igaune of Western Kentucky and 25 feet better than Nikola Lomnicka. Berry's record toss now elevates her to the best mark in the nation and came only six feet short of the meet record of 237-11 held by Southern Illinois alumna Brittany Riley.
In the latest USTFCCCA computer rankings, the women's team held steady at No. 20. Meanwhile, the men fell to No. 59 in the nation.
The Dawgs will have this weekend off, as they prepare for the 2011 State Farm MVC Outdoor Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa, May 13-15.
