Women's Golf grabs second at Redbird Invitational

NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team held on to a second place finish in its opening tournament of the season at the Redbird Invitational Sunday.
SIU finished nine strokes out of the lead with a 926 total, placing second to come-from-behind winner host Illinois State and placed two golfers in the top 15.
"We passed yesterday's leader Ball State but Illinois State came from behind and got us in the end, but second place in our first tournament of the season is a great way to start," Head coach Alexis Mihelich said.
Cassie Rushing led the Salukis as she tied for fourth place and an overall score of 224. Rushing completed the tournament with an 80 in Sunday's final round.
Alisha Matthews finished 13th with a score of 230 and final round score of 77. Margaret Gilley posted a 236 to finish in a tie for 21st while Ryann Gilley shot a 241 to place in a tie for 58th.
"I am really proud of Ryann's performance, she played some solid rounds and wasn't phased with nerves and came through when it counted," Mihelich said.
Shaina Rennegarbe rounded out the Salukis top five finishers with a 77 in the final round and overall score of 245 which put her in a tie for 50th.Ashleigh Rushing competed as an individual and completed the tournament in a tie for 41st.
Mihelich credited her final two finishers Ryann Gilley and Rennegarbe with helping the team clinch second place.
"Shaina battled and played when we needed her score as she went 2 under and combined with Ryann's score they saved second place for us," Mihelich said.
The Salukis will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as they begin play in the Cardinal Classic in Muncie, Ind. hosted by Ball State.
