Women's golf dominates first day at SIUE Intercollegiate

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team sits in first place after 18 holes at the SIUE Intercollegiate Monday.
The Salukis sit 26 strokes in front of the second-place host SIUE, as they shot a 311 on the afternoon and as they battled each other for the top spot after day one.
With the top four individual spots belonging to SIU on the day, head coach Alexis Mihelich is confident for her team going in to tomorrow's final round
"Our scores were higher than usual but with swirling winds on the back nine it was difficult for everyone," Mihelich said. "I'm looking for improvement tomorrow and we need to shoot a lower team total if we want to win."
Cassie Rushing was impressive on the day topping the tournament leader board with a 75 overall score, including a 35 on the front nine.
Margaret Gilley was second with an overall 77 while Shaina Rennegarbe came in third with a 79, and Alisha Matthews rounded out the top four Saluki finishers in fourth place with an 80.
Ryann Gilley is the fifth finisher for the Salukis team score as is in a tie for 35th with a 91.
Competing as individuals, Jennifer Bernhardt had her best performance as a Saluki as is tied for fifth with an 81, which is her second lowest 18-hole score in her career. Ashleigh Rushing came in a tie 19th with an 86 while Amber Phillips rounded out the Saluki competitors in 45th with a 95.
The Salukis will wrap up tournament play tomorrow at the Sunset Hills Golf Course with a final 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m.
