Softball falls to South Alabama in five innings

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - With no consistency on offense or in the circle, the SIU Softball team fell victim to its first run-rule defeat of the season in a 16-0 loss to South Alabama Saturday.
The Salukis (4-2) only had one two in the game used all three pitchers in the matchup. South Alabama started its rout in the top of the second when they scored six runs off five hits to take a demanding lead. They added seven runs and six hits in the third and the fourth to seal the win.
"It's embarrassing to lose by that score and I think that it could be misconstrued that it was our pitching but I think it started out as passed balls, wild pitches and things of that nature," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "And it's easy as a team to score runs when your up by eight or nine runs and I have to give to credit to South Alabama they really handed it to us."
Haley Gorman and Mallory Duran-Sellers had the Salukis only hits in the game, each going 1-for-2 on the day.
Starting pitcher Alyssa Wunderlich picks up the loss moving her to 0-1 on the season.
The loss is the worst loss in program history. The previous record was held in a loss to No. 5/8 Michigan in 2011 when the Dawgs fell 19-4.
The Dawgs conclude tournament play tomorrow when they face a rematch with the Jaguars at 10 a.m.
"This obviously does not sit well with us and I hope we come out tomorrow ready to play and we lost to Michigan pretty bad but rebounded the next day so its just the nature of the game and you have to do it," Blaylock said.
