Softball gets past SIU Edwardsville in 4-1 win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Michelle Bradley launched a three-run home run in the second, helping the SIU softball team to a 4-1 win over SIU Edwardsville at Cougar Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars out hit the Salukis, 11-8, but couldn't push a run across until the sixth and Bradley's first long ball of the season proved to be the difference in the game.
Meredith Wilson started off the second with an RBI double to put two runners on as Bradley, who entered the game with a .086 batting average, approached the plate.
"Michelle came in confident and ready to go today and I thought she did a great job picking a pitch she could handle and Meredith's double before that as well as Taylor's performance today were huge," SIU head coach Blaylock said.
The Saluki offense was shut out after the fifth and the Cougars threatened in the seventh. SIUE loaded the bases on three hits in the final frame before Katie Bertelsen coaxed a groundout to second base to end the game.
Bertelsen (7-4) earned the win coming in for starter Alyssa Wunderlich who threw three and two third innings before giving up back-to-back singles when she was replaced.
"Alyssa started guiding the ball a little bit and she wasn't very loose and Bertie came in and picked up the slack," Blaylock said.
The outcome of the game was similar to the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Salukis outlasted the Cougars 4-1 at the Coach B Classic on March 4 and Bertelsen also picked up the win in that game.
Taylor Orsburn continued her hot hitting as of late as she went 2-for-4 and Allie VadeBoncouer also added a 2-for-4 performance. Jayna Spivey and Haley Gorman each added hits.
The Salukis are back in action Saturday as they welcome preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Illinois State to Charlotte West Stadium with a doubleheader starting at noon.
