ST LOUIS - The Southern Illinois softball team used just three hits in game one and a solid performance from Brittney Lang in game two to sweep a non-conference doubleheader over Saint Louis Wednesday.
The Salukis (24-11) scored all four runs in game one in the first inning as they foiled a seventh inning threat from the Billikens to win game one 4-2.
Mallory Duran-Sellers and Haley Gorman reached on walks to start the game as they spelled disaster for SLU starter Hannah Huebbe. Huebbe then gave up a RBI single to Taylor Orsburn followed with a walk to Meredith Wilson.
An error extended the inning and Huebbe walked Morgan Barchan to score a run followed by a wild pitch that scored Wilson from third for all four runs in the first.
"Offensively we were still a little pressed from yesterday and not relaxed but we did a good job getting the win and I thought Bertie pitched a good game," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Saint Louis (17-21) came back in the first with a solo home run by right fielder Erin Harcar but would fall silent until the sixth when a run scored off a fielder's choice.
Gorman, Michelle Bradley, and Orsburn all had hits for the Salukis in the effort.
Katie Bertelsen pitched her eighth complete game, moving her to 8-7 on the season.
The Salukis used another hot first inning as they issued a 9-1 run rule win in game two behind a solid performance from Lang.
Lang struck out five en route to her seventh win of the season as she was helped by the Saluki offense, which pounded out five runs off four hits and two Billiken errors in the first.
"Brittney had been throwing really well of late and she was throwing the right pitches and hitting all her spots," Blaylock said.
Southern added a run in the second off a sacrifice fly by Orsburn and three runs in the fourth to put the run-rule into effect.
Duran-Sellers and Gorman added 2-for-3 performances as the Dawgs had eight hits. Gorman added three RBI while Allie VadeBoncouer and Orsburn each drove in two RBI.
"It felt good for the offense to put some runs on the board and keep it going," Blaylock said.
The Salukis are back in action Saturday when they travel to Springfield, Mo., for a three game conference series against Missouri State beginning with a doubleheader.
