Women's Golf finishes second at Creighton Classic

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite shaving 12 strokes off its first-round score, the Southern Illinois women's golf team finished second at the Creighton Classic Tuesday.
SIU finished with a 636 overall team score but was edged out by Missouri Valley Conference rival Northern Iowa who won the tournament with a 635 overall score at the Oak Hill Country Club.
"We came back from being down 17 strokes and it was quite the comeback in windy conditions," SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "It's like losing a game at the buzzer, but we will look forward to taking on the Panthers next week at the conference tournament."
Four Salukis finished in the top 20 with Cassie Rushing leading the way as she tied for third with a 155 (77-78). Margaret Gilley added a fifth place finish with a 156 (79-77) and Alisha Matthews came in ninth with a 161 (84-77).
Shaina Rennegarbe and Ryann Gilley added improved performances in day two to finish tied for 16th and tied for 22nd respectively.
Rennegarbe tallied a 166 (84-82) as she improved her score by two strokes in the final round. Gilley shaved off eight strokes to finish with a 168 (88-80).
Ashleigh Rushing, who competed as an individual, had a solid performance with a 163 to finish in 12th place.
The Dawgs are back in action at the MVC Championships April 22-23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
