ST. LOUIS - The Southern Illinois women's golf team has been picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference pre-championship poll announced today.
The Salukis were picked behind favorite Missouri State, who received all 10 first-place votes, and Wichita State in a poll voted on by league coaches.
Illinois State and Northern Iowa, two teams who defeated SIU in head-to-head matches this season, were picked fourth and fifth respectively. The Redbirds are the four-time defending champions in the MVC.
The estimated finish is two spots higher than the projected fifth place finish in the 2011 pre-championship poll. The Salukis finished sixth overall in the tournament where Cassie Rushing led the Salukis in a tied for third place to earn MVC All-Conference honors.
The Dawgs have the second-lowest team score in the MVC heading into the event with a 310.57, five strokes behind the Bears who hold a 305.77. SIU leads the conference in tournament wins this season as the Salukis won four out of their 10 tournaments this season.
The 54-hole tournament will be played April 22-24 at The Country Club of Terre Haute. The team champion advances to the NCAA Regionals. The 10 teams will have practice rounds Saturday and the tournament begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
Teams will play 18 holes each day (Sunday-Tuesday) and fans are invited to attend free of charge.
