Softball outlasts Murray State in 4-2 win

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Taylor Orsburn and Mallory Duran-Sellers each had two hits as the Southern Illinois softball team got past Murray State, 4-2, in non-conference action at Charlotte West Stadium Tuesday.
The Salukis (33-16) got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning off an Orsburn RBI single a Racer error.
Starting pitcher Katie Bertelsen threw a one-hit shutout through four innings and looked to be cruising through before the Racers tied the game in the fifth. Murray State scored runs off two hits and an error in the inning.
"I just thought we didn't play well in the middle of the game and not making behavioral changes and not going one at-bat at a time that we talked about made a difference," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Jayna Spivey started the sixth off with a walk followed by an Alicia Junker single and error to put two runners in scoring position for Kalyn Harker. The freshman pinch hit in the inning as she drove in Spivey to regain the lead.
Duran-Sellers then reached base on an error allowing the second run of the inning to score to help the Dawgs secure the win.
Brittney Lang became the third pitcher of the afternoon as she entered in the sixth in relief of Alyssa Wunderlich to close the game. She struck out two, adding to the Salukis six total strikeouts in the game, and didn't allow a hit in one and two thirds innings of work. The junior pitcher moved to 10-4 on the season.
"Brittney came in and did a really good job of doing what she needed to do and I was really proud of her," Blaylock said.
Kelsea Ashton and Haley Gorman each added hits in the game as the Salukis tallied eight hits in the game.
SIU is back in action Wednesday as it travels to Illinois for a single game at 4 p.m.
