SIU second baseman Jake Welch has been named a post-season all-star in the Prospect League. Welch hit .313 with nine home runs, 13 doubles and 14 stolen bases in 54 games playing with the Richmond (Ind.) RiverRats in the collegiate wooden bat league. He was also named the league's player of the week on July 24.
Welch is entering his junior season with SIU. He hit .308 with 21 extra-base hits and led the Salukis with 16 stolen bases as a sophomore.
Welch wasn't the only Saluki who had success in the Prospect League this summer. Derek Trovillion and Nick Johnson were both midseason all-stars in the league. Trovillion, who also played for the RiverRats, finished the season with a .346 batting average. He was fourth in the league in home runs with 12 and third in the league with 61 RBI. Johnson hit .321 with five triples, one homer and 35 RBI in 53 games playing for the Terre Haute Rex. Trovillion and Johnson are both seniors at SIU.
The Prospect League is comprised of college players from North America and beyond. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid so as to maintain their college eligibility.
