CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's golf team has announced its first signee for the 2015-16 season, Sun Young Jung of Springfield, Mo. Jung, a senior at Glendale High School, has come away with over 20 tournament titles in her four years of high school golf.
"Sun is a very disciplined player, and she has a strong work ethic," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "She is motivated to be the best player she can be, and I believe she will accomplish anything she puts her mind to."
Most recently, Jung finished her senior season with seven first-place finishes and five tournament scores in the 60s. Jung opened her season with a career-low score and course record of 64 at the Seymour Invitational at Marshfield Country Club, including seven birdies. She followed that victory up with her fourth consecutive top-10 finish in the state tournament later that season.
In her time golfing for the Glendale Lady Falcons, Jung won the individual state championship title in 2013 and was runner-up in 2012. She is a four-time All-State and All-Conference golfer, and has found success on the course outside of school play as well.
Yung has won the Junior Springfield Championship six times, including last summer with scores of 66 and 72. She was also a member of the 2014 Four State Missouri team that took second place in the tournament.
"It takes a certain caliber player to be able to shoot mid-60 scores in competition even in junior and high school golf," Mihelich said. "With her ability to go low and success as an individual high school state champion, she will be great asset to the program."
Following her graduation this spring, Jung will join the Salukis as the first recruit for the upcoming season. She plans to study sports administration.
