Men's Golf takes 15th place at Cardinal Intercollegiate

The Southern Illinois University men's golf team dropped six spots during the final round of the Cardinal Intercollegiate on Tuesday, finishing 15th out of 16 teams at the two-day tournament hosted by the University of Louisville.
After shooting back-to-back 298 team scores in the first two rounds, the Salukis carded a 327 in the third round. They finished 59-over par for the tournament and 53 strokes behind tournament champion Louisville, which edged Louisiana-Monroe by one stroke.
"In the first two rounds we played ok and shot a respectable score, but today we had a bad start and never did recover," said head coach Justin Fetcho. "The course wasn't playing much different, we just didn't play well. Physically, we're not bad, but our mental toughness today was put to the test and we didn't respond."
Wade Thompson was SIU's top finisher, shooting 7-over par for the tournament and placing 26th out of 84 golfers. He was SIU's only golfer to score in the 70s today, posting a 77.
"Wade did some very good things for us this week," Fetcho said. "He gained confidence in his ball striking and was in position off the tee the majority of time."
The Salukis play again next week at the UT-Martin Skyhawk Classic on Oct. 6-7.
"In our team meeting after the tournament today, we talked about consistency and how on the same golf course we can't go from shooting a 74 to an 85 a day later," Fetcho added. "We have three guys at home working hard, itching and scratching to get in lineup, and we'll come home and evaluate where were at."
