CARBONDALE, Ill. - Behind a three-RBI day from Taylor Martin and five hits from Logan Blackfan, the Maroon team clinched the Fall World Series over the Black team with an 8-3 win on Wednesday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Just like in the opening game of the series, the Black team got on the scoreboard first, this time in the second inning after an RBI single from Chase Slone. It would the only lead they would have, as the Maroon team responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. Three-straight RBI hits from Martin, Jarod Schmidt, and Braden Mosley quickly turned the tide in favor of the home squad, giving them a 3-1 lead.
The Maroon team would add to their lead in the fourth inning, after Kenny King picked up an RBI on a groundball out that scored Will Farmer.
Things got interesting in the seventh and eighth inning for the Black team, as they were able to plate a run in each frame to make it a 4-3 game heading to the bottom of the eighth. That would be as close as they would get though, as the Maroon team put the game out of reach with four runs in the inning. The highlight of the inning was a two-run single from Martin that scored Farmer and Blackfan.
Anthony Shimkus entered the game in the ninth and pitched a hitless inning to finish the game.
The three-game series comes to close on Saturday, as the Maroon and Black teams finish the Fall World Series at Itchy Jones Stadium.
