OAHU, Hawaii - The Saluki women's golf team played the most competitive field it will likely face all season at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational this week. The Salukis finished the tournament in 13th place with a team score of 949.
Sophomore Kristie Yang led the Salukis, tying for 39th place out of 88 golfers. This is the first time in Yang's career that she has finished with the lowest score for SIU. The second round of play proved to be Yang's best, as she golfed the lowest round of the tournament for the Salukis with a 75. Yang was the only Saluki to finish with two rounds in the 70s.
After the first round of play, SIU finished 13th, with a team score of 318. By the end of day one, the Salukis had dropped to 14th, after the team's highest round of the competition, 320.
The final day, however, saw the Salukis bounce back with SIU's best team score of the week, dropping nine strokes from the previous round to post a 311 score. Lipscomb and SIU moved back and forth throughout the tournament, with only one point separating the teams after the first and final round. In the end, the Salukis topped local competitors, Lipscomb and Western Illinois, which finished in 14th and 15th places, respectively.
Nationally ranked teams took the top spots at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, with the tournament title going to No. 13 Oklahoma State, followed by No. 15 Texas A&M in second place. Middle Tennessee State made its way into the top three, ousting No. 26 Baylor in the process.
The Salukis will play host in their next tournament, welcoming 10 schools to participate in the Saluki Invitational on March 29-30.
