PEORIA, Ill. - A career-high 12 strikeouts from Aaron Hauge was not enough for Southern Illinois, as the Salukis (4-20, 0-4 MVC) dropped a 1-0 decision to Bradley Friday afternoon.
Hauge showed why he is one of the top pitchers in the MVC, pitching eight innings and only allowing five hits against the Braves (18-5, 1-0 MVC). The 12 strikeouts from Hauge were the most by a Saluki pitcher since Tyler Norrick's 12 against the Braves on April 8, 2005.
"It was a typical Friday game in the Valley," said SIU head coach Ken Henderson. "Two very good guys threw extremely well and threw strikes. There were 21 combined strikeouts and not much offense. Aaron Hauge did a great job and gave us a chance, but we just could not find a way to score."
The lone run of the game came in the third inning. After Hauge (2-3) opened the frame with a strikeout, BU's Chris Godinez hit a triple to left centerfield. Godinez then scored the lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Southern struggled on offense, recording five hits, all singles, against BU's Elliot Ashbeck (6-1). Tyler Rolland was SIU's best hitter of the game, going 2-for-3 on the day. Chase Slone, Greg Lambert, and Ryan Sabo were the other Salukis to record a hit.
"We were not very good on offense," said Henderson. "We didn't compete very well on offense. We had a couple of runners in scoring position, but didn't have good at-bats. You have to give credit to their guy and tip your hat to him."
SIU will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon. Game two of the series is set to start at 2:00 p.m. Bryce Sablotny makes his second start of the season for the Salukis.
