ST. LOUIS -- Saluki track and cross country senior Oscar Medina is one of 10 student-athletes that have been named a Missouri Valley Conference Leadership & Service Award recipient for the 2014-15 spring season, MVC commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday.
In order to be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their MVC Leadership & Service Award honorees.
Medina, a native of Chicago, Ill., is a three-time All-MVC runner on the Saluki cross country team -- helping contribute to two men's team titles and a runner-up finish in 2014 along the way. Medina is also a four-year track letterman, having scored in at least one conference meet each season during his career -- including his time as a member of the 2012 indoor champion distance medley relay team that helped the Saluki men secure their first team title since 1992. He is the third Saluki track athlete in the last four seasons to earn the award for the spring season, following T.J. Heffernan (2012) and Lucas Cherry (2013).
Off the track, Medina has been very active in his four years at SIU. He is the president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), and was most recently appointed a member of SIU System President Randy Dunn's search committee for a new athletic director. Among his success on the track and a long list of community activities (including helping orchestrate the recent Student-Athlete Talent Show to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale), Medina has maintained a 3.10 cumulative GPA as an aviation technology student.
