Harre and Wideman named MVC Scholar-Athletes of the Week

ST. LOUIS -- Curtis Wideman and Shaye Harre of Southern Illinois have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Wideman and Harre were honored for their performances during the period of April 27 - May 3.
Saluki senior thrower Curtis Wideman had an all-around successful weekend yet again at the Pacesetter Quadrangular, coming away with the hammer throw and discus event titles. On Friday, Wideman came close to his career-best in the hammer at 67.38m (221-01) for the win, then followed that up with a victory in the discus on Saturday at 52.11m (170-11). Wideman was also the third-place finisher in the shot put at 18.10m (59-04.75). Wideman currently hold a 3.2 GPA in TV and digital media radio.
Sophomore Shaye Harre led the Salukis to a series win over second-place Missouri State by batting .500 with an .875 slugging percentage in a four-game week. Harre also drew four walks and had a .615 on-base percentage. She had four RBIs, including the walk-off RBI single to give SIU a run-rule 10-2 win in Game Two. She played perfect defense in the field and also pitched a complete-game win in Southern's 10-2 win over MSU on Saturday. Harre holds a 3.91 GPA in animal sciences.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
